We’re throwing a July 4th party at our house and the hunt is on to find cookout-friendly food on the cheap!
I had to buy enough food to feed at least 20 people plus kiddos. The first thing I did was ask all those who attend to bring at least one side dish. But, for everything else-bring on the coupons:
Meat: I bought the hamburger meat from the National Steak and Poultry Sale last month. But, I still had to pick up hot dogs and brats.

I price matched the Food Pyramid ad this week at Walmart which landed me Bar-S hot dogs for .50 each. I combined that with my $1 off the purchase of 2 coupon and ended up with 6 packages of FREE hot dogs!
I also price matched the Aldi’s brand brats ($1.99) for the Walmart off brand Brats (normally $3.98). I bought 2 packages of brats for a total of $3.98.
For all those hot dog and hamburger buns, I hit Target! Pepperidge Farm is on sale for $2 each. I combined that with the Target coupon for .75 off and ended up with 7 packages of hamburger/hot dog buns for $1.25 each.
I grabbed 4 cans of Bush’s Baked Beans at Walmart for $1.66 each and combined that with a $1 off the purchase of 2 coupon. So, I ended up with 4 cans of Bush’s Baked Beans for $4.64.
I had to get the drinks too, which for us, means water and pop. I hit Target since Pepsi products are on sale this week.
I
grabbed 4 (12) packs of Pepsi products for $10 at Target then, I combined that with the manufacturers coupon found in the Food Pyramid ad this week which gave me an extra 12 pack for FREE! That’s 5 (12 packs) for only $10!

Since I was at Target, I picked up a 24 pack of Market Pantry water for $3. I also bought 2 packages of Lays chips that were on sale for $2.33 each. I combined that with the All You Magazine coupon for $1 off the package of 2. Which landed me 2 packages of chips for $3.66.
For dessert, I was thinking Root Beer Floats. I grabbed three packages of Edy’s Ice Cream at Target for only $1.33 each after the Target coupon! I bought the Root Beer with my Pepsi product deal above.
All in all, I spent $38.02 excluding the NSP hamburger meat. Not bad for a cookout!
Got any tips for having a budget-friendly fourth?
I have done some of the same things- to save on the 4th.
Thank Goodness to a good sale at Homeland and double coupons!
I'm making the brownies in star shape and decorated. They have the Betty Crocker supreme brownie mixes on sale 2 for $4 (I bought 4packs and had $1 coupons off of 2, so I used two of those (doubled) and got all 4 packs for just $4!!!!
Then I'm making the 4th of July colors fruit jello cups. They have jello on sale for 50 cents a pack. I bought 6 packs, because I had coupons – save $1 off of 3 (doubled)… so they were free!
Now,since I had like coupons, I actually had my husband make a purchase too…
Then I still have plenty of Cool Whip from the awesome coupons and sales last month.
So today, I go out and buy star cookie cutters, star shaped sprinkles and clear plastic cups and strawberries to finish it off.
This saved me a fortune!
Also, just another note- Homeland has the Resers 3 pound tubs of potato salad or macaroni salad on sale for $3.99 (normally $5.99). Then there are printable coupons available for $1 off of each, doubled… so total price per container is just $1.99!!!
Happy and Safe 4th to everyone!
Sarah,
Thanks for posting how you saved on your fourth dinner. Very helpful to see how you shop!!
I went out today to Homeland and Target. Homeland I got Wholie Guacomole for .50, Bag of Lays chips for free (w/coupon – free when I purchased a Frito Lay dip), BBQ sauce and mustard free, American singles .50 each, Baked beans 3 cans for $1.33 and Starbucks icecream for .50. All with coupons. I also get the Hawaiin bread (4 pack buns) for free and make hamburger sliders for the kids because they like how little they are. Just their size. Again, with a coupon.
At Target I got baby back ribs $1.74 a pound. Had $1 off coupons for each of those. They averaged about $2.50 a rack. Got 10 ears of corn for a $1, didn't have a coupon for that but it was still a good deal!!
Happy fourth!!
Michelle
You gals did AWESOME jobs! My hats off to ya! amp
I have looked and looked for the Bush's baked beans coupon and cannot find it. What am I missing? Do I need to put in a certain zip code?
I totally forgot about the corn deal, by the time I got to Target it was gone so I price matched that at Walmart too.
LOVE that rib deal, Michelle!
About the Baked Beans coupon, it should be the first coupon on the page when you click the link. It's already check marked too, I didn't enter a zip code to get it.
Sarah
Love this post. Like someone said above, it's always helpful to learn how you shop. It's fun to imagine you zipping from store to store, kicking butt and taking names!
