When I was 17 I met my husband. He was awesome, he actually was my best friend but he had a ‘normal’ job and I just didn’t think it was cool. (Keep in mind, I was very young). It actually took about 2 years of convincing before we even started dating.
When we decided to move out of the city, I had to stop doing all of the things that were bringing us extra money. I felt like I was being led to start teaching workshops and forming a business. However, those things take money and we had just lost the little bit I was making from babysitting and other avenues.
My husband and I prayed a lot about it. Only a few days later, his company asked him if he’d like to take on a second job. By him taking on the second job, I would be able to put some money aside and into my business.
What was that second job? Cleaning the office.
I asked him, ‘do you really want to do that?’ He did not think twice about it. All he thought was that it would bless his family and he did it and still does it.
So many times people say ‘I hate my job,’ ‘I hate my boss,’ ‘I’ll never move up,’ or ‘I’ll never make any more money than this.’ Many times we imprison ourselves with our own words.
Your source of income is not your job, your source of supply is not your boss. It is the Lord that ’supplies all your needs according to his riches and glory.’
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not
for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord
as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24
It does not matter if you clean bathrooms for a living, it does not matter if
you are a national speaker, what matter is that you do your job ‘as unto the
Lord.’
Put 110% into everything you do even if your boss is horrible and even if
you can’t stand your job. God will honor your work. God is looking at your heart and He is a God of change.
God created the universe from nothing, all living things were created literally out of nothing. If our God can do that then he can certainly causes raises to occur where there have been none, he can cause an increase in pay when you’ve been told otherwise and he can create positions for you where no position exists!
Our God is a creator!
No matter what your job is, do your best at it and then some. Take an extra class at night to learn how to be more efficient. Help others in your office, stop stealing the office supplies and don’t do just enough to get by.
Remember this:
“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you
have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many
things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ Matthew 25:23
We cannot expect to be promoted if we go to our jobs with bad attitudes and only halfway fulfill our work. God looks at your heart, he sees your motives.
My motivation is not money. My motivation is fulfilling the call on my life that God has given to me. If I obey the Word, fulfilling what God has led me to do then blessing will inevitably follow.
My husband did not care what job he worked simply because he knew who he was working for. The very first night he showed up to clean that office, he worked so hard that he was given a raise the next day!
I want to encourage you to work as ‘unto the Lord’ and stop imprisoning yourself with your own words. Speak the Word and break out of the box! Let God promote you, let God give you that raise, let God create a new job just for you.
It does not matter how old or young you are or how long you have worked at that job. Your circumstances do not dictate God’s Word. If you are still breathing on this earth then God says:
“For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
There is hope for you today! Let us not just be blessed but let us be a blessing!

Awesome isn't He!
I encourage you and your unique ministry.
I love this devotional! It reinforces what I am walking right now. Keep up the great work!
I started following you on Twitter because you are in my area, then saw your preview on Channel 8. You go, girl!
Great Word Sarah, I'm proud of you.
I am new to this blog. A friend in Texas just told me about it today. It never ceases to amaze me how God works in our lives. This devotional was exactly what I needed today. Thank you so much.
god bless you sarah
I couldn't agree more with this!! I believe there is a reason things don't work out for some people who get into what others are doing. It's not God's vision for them. You see God's vision for YOU – which no one else can see. Others can try to follow along, but they'll never see the big picture/vision God has given to you. If we don't know the next step, don't look to others. GOD created the plan for YOUR life – not your friends, family, or coworkers.
I really love this post. Imagine what the world would be like if we were all using our God given talents instead of so many following the leader!
I love all your great coupon and saving ideas…but I love you the most when you are sharing from your heart about what God is doing in and through your life. He IS able, isn't He…
Thank you for sharing your testimony with all of us Stay-at-Home Moms. It is an inspiration to me, because I'm exactly in the same place where you were some years ago. May God bless you more.
God has a special anointing on you and you are stepping into His devine purpose. Thank you for sharing from your heart. It encourages me press even closer to God.
Each devotional is so good! I was the school nurse at a Christian school…and that is low paying and not glamorous. Blood, snot, puke, lice, helping a K-4 scrape doggie doo off their shoe…but I loved being there for the kids and their parents when they were ill or hurt. God gave me that love for the job and He went before me to prepare me specifically for what I would do.
Now I am blessed to do clean-up in the kitchen of our church for the Wednesday night suppers. Do I love cleaning? NO! Especially at home (just ask my dh!) Do I look forward to working at church? YES!! God has blessed me with such fun people to work with and it seems like we are there to visit and laugh, and the clean-up is just an afterthought! The time just whizzes by!
Every job is an important job, and God is not a respecter of persons…Bible talk for no one is "more important" than another in God's eyes. All jobs are important in the successful HUM of our world. $$ and prestige are not accurate guages of importance…and do not bring happiness on their own.
Thank you…..after a forced termination in the pastorate due to a power struggle, my husband and I (in our late 50's….35 yrs in full time pastoring) had to start our own cleaning business to meet our financial needs….it has been a humbling experience….but your devotion jumped off the page at me today….Please pray for the little body of believers we pastor now meeting in a storefront….we meet in a storefront…we still clean houses…..trusting God!
