Can You Get a Better Deal than Priceline?

This past weekend, my husband ran in the OKC Memorial Marathon (YAY!) which meant we had to stay overnight in Oklahoma City. I actually ended up finding a ton of points from an old credit card so I scored the room for only $14. But something happened when I arrived at the hotel that surprised me.

Normally, when I book a hotel room, I scroll through tons of deal sites like Expedia, Priceline, etc. When I handed over the receipt for my room the woman noticed the credit card company booked via Priceline. She then told me that the next time I travel, I need to call the hotel directly and let them know what Priceline is quoting. She went on to tell me that they could not only match that price but many times, they can beat it.

That's great information! The next time you travel, check out those low prices on the famous deal sites then make the phone call and see if you can score an even better deal!

I saw on Oprah years ago that you should call the hotel directly and ask for a manager. Then proceed to ask for their best deal. I've had good experiences with that, mostly.

WOW! that is AWESOME! As a former hotel employee I can tell you this does not work all the time though so YMMV big time on this tip!

That is true for all aspects of travel. Your Car Rental companies and Airlines for example will use a GDS to put their rates out to the 'Pricelines' of the world. They have to pay a fee to the GDS for distributing their product, along with paying Priceline a commission to make the reservation. Buy directly you essentially cut-out 2 'middle men', thus the company can offer you a lower rate.

Very cool, good to know about the commission and distribution fees!! And, I didn't even think about doing it with airlines. Thanks!
