Frugal Gifts: Christmas Book of Cards & $50 Hobby Lobby Giveaway

Posted: 12/24/10 6:59 AM (Modified: 12/24/10 6:59 AM)

Last week, I was given an awesome gift from one of our Money Saving Contributors, Brandi O. It was a scrapbook of the Christmas Story made with Christmas cards and it is beautiful. I wanted to share the book with you and the instructions, this is perfect for any family.

From Brandi O:

Nine years ago someone gave me a book similar to this and over the years I have been collecting Christmas cards and making the books for friends and family. After Christmas sales are the best time to pick up the Christmas cards at places like Hallmark, Hobby Lobby, Dollar General and Christian bookstores.

What you will need:

A Scrapbook (Hobby Lobby is best)
Christmas cards depicting the various scenes from the Christmas story (Bethlehem, Jesus, Mary & Joseph, manger, shepherds, angels, names of Jesus, Mary & Jesus, Wise men traveling, star, Wise men with gifts and 2 basic Christmas cards)
Corner rounder
Paper cutter/trimmer
Scrapbook adhesive or tape
Various colors of card stock paper
Template #1
Template #2

First print off the template #1 so you can see what Christmas cards you are going to need which are noted next to the page numbers. Page numbers are only there to help you keep everything organized.

Next, gather the Christmas cards that will coordinate with the pages of the book and write the page number on the back of the card so you can keep them organized and know which ones to look for if you are missing some. Match the best colored stock paper that goes with the Christmas card. I like to pick out a subtle color in the card to make it pop out.

Then, keeping the stock paper in the 1-20 page order, print the wording using the template #2 provided. Be VERY careful and diligent to make sure the correct colored stock paper and wording match up! If you mess up, just turn the stock paper over and use the other side because it wont be visible once it is put in the scrapbook. When all the pages are printed, use the paper cutter/trimmer to remove the back flap of the card and use the corner rounder. Adhere the card to the card stock paper centered above the wording then place card stock in the scrapbook.

This scrapbook is simply beautiful and my entire family just loves it. Enjoy!

Dear Mrs. Queen, *hee*

I really liked your Christmas card book of cards idea & I have been selecting just the right ones. However, as I was going over the templates, I saw an inconsistency. The first template has two #19 & the second template doesn't. (See excerpts below.)

TEMPLATE 1
Page 19: Wisemen at manger
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his
mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.

Page 19: Wisemen with gifts
Then they opened their treasures and presented him
with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

TEMPLATE 2
Page 19: Wise men at manger
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his
mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.
Then they opened their treasures and presented him
with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

What I need rectified is this: After Page 16,(Names of Jesus) how many cards do you need? (3 or 4?)

Thank you for your time. And yes, I know I have a whole year to make this gift.*hee*

Pae 19 should be like template 2

Page 19: Wise men at manger
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his
mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.
Then they opened their treasures and presented him
with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

I don't have Word and had trouble using Googledocs. Sorry for the confusion!

On the names of Jesus...I use cards that just say JESUS or you can find them that have several names of Jesus on it (Prince of Peace, Emmanuel, King of Kings, etc) but I just use one card.

If you have any more questions, just let me know! Thanks!

No problem. Actually, that's what I thought. I also mentioned it for others that may be interested in making it. I suggest correcting the sight, just in case.

Anyway, now all I need is a scrapbook and I'm "good to go". FYI: I'm thinking of only using alternating sheets of red and green paper. That way, it'll have even more of a Christmasy feel. : ) And, it's a good reason to save past cards. We have a computer box lid full of them. I'm just going to use them and see what kind of response I get from the recipient.

Thanks so for sharing this wonderful idea!!

Believe it or not, I finished the book today. It turned out even better then I hoped. I ended up buying a scrapbook album with exactly 10 pages. Thank you Hobby Lobby. I liked that each page has a clear cover unlike a scrapbook. It worked out perfect. For the crowing glory, I'm, going to find their initial and adhere it to the book cover. Oh, and I didn't only use green and red paper. As suggested, I went with what accentuated the picture. And, if it was on white paper, I framed it on construction paper. Now, I have a whole year to enjoy it.
