Today's Frugal Gift idea was sent to us by Jessica from jessicahocutt.wordpress.com. This is such a cute idea, thinking about making one for myself!

{DIY Nest Necklace}

  • Tools
    • Necklace chain
    • Closure for necklace (you can use an old on you never use for this)
    • Wire: I used 24 gage(copper necklace),it’s thin but pliable.  You can use 20 gage it’s thicker but a little harder to work with at times (silver necklace)
    • Jump ring- to attach your necklace to the chain to hang properly or you can turn the loop to make it hang correctly, your choice
    • Beads:  I used  the glass pearls beads (8mm).  You can cut up an old necklace and use those or mix and match Pink for girls and blue for boys.  Or the letters to make words.
    • Wire cutters
    • Round nose pliers – you can use a nail for the smaller 24 gage if you're in a crunch

Now take about 5 ft of wire and cut with your wire cutters.  Put the beads of your choice on it and take the end of the wire and using your nail or round nose pliers, wrap it about two times to keep the beads from falling off.

Wrap the circle we just made on to the bottom and form the beads in to a circle on top.

Now start wrapping the wire around the beads, starting on the bottom.  Make it messy looking, the messier the better.  You can even crimp the wire to make it look messier.  Move from top to bottom and all over, not in a certain pattern or it makes it look to neat and clean.

To keep the wire together you must occasionally weave the wire up and through the bottom of the base and between the beads.  Do this halfway through wrapping the wire, wrap the rest of the wire leaving  1 ½ ft left on the end.  You will weave it again between the beads this holds it secure.  Leave about 6 -12 inches.

Now decide which end is up and you will make your loop to hang on the necklace.  Bring the wire straight up about less than ¼ inch and wrap the wire around your nail several times and then finish it by wrapping down the vertical part of the wire to make it stronger and cut your wire off.

You can add your jump ring or just turn the loop to make it hang on the necklace correctly.  Slide your chain on and you're finished.

Tips: Messier the better.  Make sure to cover the bottom of the nest good.  When using letters for words sometime you must put them upside down or do like the pic above.  Have fun and God bless.

Thanks, Jessica for sending in this great gift idea!
