Choosing the Right After School Activity
It's nearly time to head back to school, which means new teachers, new school clothes and a new daily schedule. But it's not all about time in the classroom- your child's after school activities are just as important and should be chosen wisely.
So how do you know what extracurricular activity will be best for your son or daughter? The best place to start is with your child. What is she interested in? Does he like to run, draw or perform? Does she have a lot of energy to burn each day?
A great local option for those looking for a sport activity is SoccerCity Tulsa. SoccerCity offers leagues for players of all ages. Their Lil' Kickers program is nationally recognized and open to kids ages 18 months to 9 years.
Lil’ Kickers uses the great game of soccer to teach kids to be successful in life. Kids can begin as toddlers learning how to kick and develop gross motor movements and end up as a school aged player with a strong set of soccer skills and an understanding of the team concept. Classes are designed for specific age groups and skill levels and work together to allowing children to easily progress through the program.
SoccerCity's Fall Session runs from September 6- November 12. They are hosting an Open House on Saturday, August 27 from 10 a.m. to noon for families to come and find out more about their programs.
When narrowing down your child's options, you'll also want to consider their age. The younger the child, the less time you may want to commit them to each week in an extracurricular activity. As they grow, children are able to handle and balance more activities successfully. But even your teen needs some down time, so make sure they don't over-commit themselves by joining too many teams, clubs or classes at one time.
Here are a few other things to be on the lookout for:
- Fees: for the class and uniform
- Class size: how many children there are per instructor
- Friendly, knowledgeable staff/instructors
- Clean, safe space for the activity
And as with many things pertaining to your kids- asking other parents you know and trust for a recommendation is always a great idea.
