Couponing 101: Are You Overpaying at the Dollar Store?

When my husband and I were married (11 years ago), he swore up and down that the dollar store prices could not be beat. Every week, he would head to the dollar store to load up on groceries and other items. I, on the other hand, had never heard of such a thing so I headed for the nearest Walmart instead. Thus began our first argument, 'which is cheaper?'

I remember coming home with groceries each week and he insisted I had paid too much. I'm sure that was true in some ways but I did figure out that our local dollar store (not the $1 store) was rounding up to make it sound like I was getting a good deal. For example, our detergent was $4.97 at Walmart or $5 at the dollar store.

Then, when I began couponing, I suddenly realized the $1 store wasn't the answer either. Why pay $1 when I can get toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream and other items completely  free after coupons? Yep, even the $1 was way too high.

A friend sent me this article, Why You're Overpaying at The Dollar Store and I thought I would share it with you as well. While the dollar store is great for some items, keep your grocery shopping at the grocery store with coupons and sales and you'll likely beat those dollar prices!

Once on his show on Headline News, Clark Howard had a list of the ten things he bought at the $ store. I don't remember them all, but the two that I buy most often are drain cleaner and hair brushes.
