Frugal Living: Make Your Own Sandbox
This is a great guest post from Mindy at Mommies with Cents.
My parents bought my children a little water table a few years ago and it has been a hit ever since. I have always wanted to get them a sandbox, but they can be so expensive- not to mention they don’t always have tops on them, so water and creatures can constantly invade the sandbox! My husband and I decided to make my children a sandbox using very few tools.
First, we purchased a type of Rubbermaid tote that had a lid and wheels. Then, we filled sand into the box that we purchased from Lowe’s. Lastly, we added some $1 toys and voila! The sandbox cost us a little over $20 when all done. The best part is that it has a lid. We can take the sandbox to grandparent houses or wherever we need.
The only drawback is that it is right on the ground, so we have to prop it on a table in order for the kids to not have to bend over constantly. The do-it-yourself sandbox is a great addition in our home! My kids absolutely love to go outside and play with the sandbox. What a great economical tool!

It might be nice to use some lumber and make a sturdy "frame" on legs for it...to put it closer to the level of your kids for easy play! You would need to be sure that it sat low in the frame...so that it wouldn't tip over.
I like this idea.
We made an alternative to the traditional sand box that we absolutely love. I found a used sand box with a lid on Craigslast--the crab-shaped kind. Then we bought 5 bags of deer corn at Atwoods and made a corn box! It's clean, the kids love playing in it, and best of all, I don't have sand being tracked into the house....just some stray pieces of corn that are easy to pick up.
I have been fearing a sand box because of possible cat poo and spiders! This is a great solution to that! Clean sand is great!!!
This is a great idea. When the kids went to a play group they put beans in it. Thanks for the reminder.
we used our sandbox when it snowed outside, we filled it with snow and brought it into the kitchen so the little ones can play in it without getting frostbite all over, and we stayed warm and toasty watching them...
