Canning 101: Why You Should Start Canning
At a recent workshop, one of our attendees came up to me afterwards and spoke to me about canning. I became completely fascinated by it and asked her to write up a post for us all about canning. Today, I'm going to share with you a part of the post explaining why you should start canning. Tomorrow, I'm going to share with you the equipment needed to get started. Check out this amazing information from Kelly:
Time Saving & Affordable:
Canning your own foods can make a difference in time and money. When I come to the end of my day and realize that I have not set anything out for dinner, I can go to my pantry and pull out a whole meal, let’s say “roast, potatoes, veggies” and then I have a pot roast on the table in 25 minutes. Now that is time saving! And, I didn't’t have to stop and buy pizza or fast food on the way home, which also saved me money. Now that is what I call a successful dinner.
You can go to the pantry and pull out your cake, slice it up, put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, pour some chocolate over it and you have a nice, delicious dessert. It is so rewarding to know that you canned all of this and put it in your pantry. And besides that, it tastes great! It makes you feel successful in taking a few extra steps with what you have and serving it to your family at the end of the day.
One of many things that I love about canning is, I can go and pick veggies fresh from the garden, can them and I know they are truly fresh. It started and stopped with me. I grew it. I canned it. We ate it. No middle man.
Here is a few things that I love to can: Carrots, sweet corn, brown beans and ham, deer, pork roast, pork and beef ribs, chuck roast, hamburger, bacon, new potatoes, roasted tomato sauce, chicken breast and chicken broth. You can can your meat with the bone or without. I like it both ways. Those are the most used items in our pantry. Every family will be different. You will can what your family likes most.
Now that you're convinced, come back tomorrow and find out how to get started!
