I'm not sure if it has to do with living in Oklahoma, but I'm always asked if it is cost effective to purchase a cow for beef rather than buying it at the store. The only thing is, I have never done that before. Not only am I not sure about the cost (which isn't all that cheap), I also did not realize how many different cuts of meat there actual are! Recently, I read an AWESOME, knock-yo-socks off article on Once A Month Mom titled Get Real: How to Purchase Local Grass-Fed Beef.
If you have questions about buying local beef, read that article! She did some great research on the different cuts of meat and explained how to go about finding a cow for your family.

My brother has raised steers and pigs through 4H. The meat we get is great. It definitely makes a difference which butcher you use and how the meat is packaged. It costs a little more to have the meat vacuum sealed, rather than just wrapped in butcher paper. But it lasts much longer. If you have questions feel free to ask

We purchased 1/4 of a cow and paid $.99 a lb. it was packaged like at Reasors. We still thought it was too much beef. I now just go to the Reasor's big meat sale and just get what I need. Sam Reed
