Make Your Own Mosquito Repellent
It's that time of year and we've been all about bug repellent on the site lately because I feel like our family is being attacked every time we walk outside. I spotted this oh-so-cool Natural Mosquito Repellent recipe on One Good Thing and I thought I would give it a try. As it turns out, it works!
I do want to mention a couple of things first though. This is an all natural, chemical free repellent which means you may need to reapply it a little more than the chemical version. Also, when mixing, be sure to use gloves. Hold on, before you skim that sentence, let me say it again BE SURE TO USE GLOVES. Why? You will be mixing essential oils which is just fine but getting all those oils all over your hands without diluting them can have some odd effects.
We did this recipe for a news segment and I did not use gloves (only b/c they didn't look cute on TV) and it wasn't too good. The smells are very overpowering when not diluted and I accidently spilled it onto my hands so I had very strong smelling oils on my hands which absorbed quickly. Let's just say I didn't feel too good after that for at least 2 hours.
Ok, now that you have your gloves on, you are ready for the next step.
Ingredients:
2 Cups of Witch Hazel (I bought this at Walgreens)
15 Drops of Citronella Oil
15 Drops of Lemongrass Oil
5 Drops of Lavender Oil
5 Drops of Peppermint Oil
Directions: Pour the witch hazel into a bowl and mix in the essential oils. Then, simply pour into a spray bottle and give yourself a spritz before you go outside. Shake the bottle well before you use it again to keep it all stirred up.
Essential oils can be purchased at health food stores, these are NOT fragrance oils. There is a difference, be sure to pick up good quality oils too-don't cheap out. Even though you'll pay for them upfront, they'll last a very long time and are well worth the investment.
Chemical free bug repellant run from $12-$25 but you can make this for about 6 bucks. Enjoy!

If you are using essential oils purchased at health food stores, grocery stores, etc., you ARE NOT skipping the chemicals. These oils are low-grade fragrance oils that ARE NOT 100% therapeutic-grade oils. Anytime you are applying any essential oils to your skin, or using any essential oils for that matter, they must be 100% therapeutic-grade such as Young Living oils to be completely safe and effective. Otherwise, you may as well use the can of bug spray that's filled with chemicals. Here is a recipe for 100% therapeutic-grade essential oil bug spray that is completely natural and safe made with 100% therapeutic-grade oils and not the sub par quality oils you will find in stores.
3 oz. distilled water
5 drops Young Living Essential Oils Peppermint oil
10 drops Young Living Essential Oils Purification oil
5 drops Young Living Essential Oils Lavender oil
5 drops Young Living Essential Oils Cedarwood oil
Mix all ingredients in spray bottle. Shake and spray often on entire body. Keep out of eyes, ears, and sensitive areas. You must shake the bottle each time you use it, as oil and water naturally separate.
All of these oils can be purchased at www.YoungLivingHealingEssentialOils.com
