When it comes time to purchase a new appliance for your home, one of the first things many of us does is look for the best sales price. And while the sticker price definitely matters, it's important to remember that with any product that uses energy- from light bulbs to washing machines- you want to think about how much money you'll be spending each month on your energy bill as well. Buying smart is key! And if you're looking for an easy way to tell which models will save you money over the months and years ahead, just look for the ENERGY STAR® label.

So what is ENERGY STAR? It's actually a joint program of the U.S.. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S.. Department of Energy to help save consumers money and protect the environment through the use of energy efficient products and practices. So if you see a product with the ENERGY STAR label, you know that it has been tested and proven to increase energy efficiency, compared to other makes and models on the market. They've done the research for you!

And the results are adding up. As more and more Americans utilize ENERGY STAR qualified products, we saved nearly $18 billion on utility bills in 2010. That's huge!

When you make smart, energy efficient choices in your home, your family can save nearly a third of your energy bill (and similar savings of greenhouse emissions!), without sacrificing style, features or comfort.

Here in Oklahoma, Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) is proud to be an ENERGY STAR partner. In March of this year, PSO was honored by the U.S.. Environmental Protection Agency with a 2012 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. The award honors those companies who are helping Americans find cost-effective ways to save energy in all areas, which is good for our climate, health and our future. PSO also received the EPA's ENERGY STAR Partner award in 2012 and 2011.

In their commitment to helping Oklahomans save energy, PSO offers a wide range of tools you can use to boost energy efficiency in your home and workplace. Their low-cost/no-cost money saving tips and incentives, rebates and discounts are open to all PSO customers. Simply visit

And when you head out with your shopping list this year, make sure you're looking for the ENERGY STAR label along with those low prices. With ENERGY STAR qualified products in your home, you'll be saving money and energy for years to come.
