How to Avoid a Scam while Shopping Online this Christmas

I am a HUGE fan of shopping online, especially during the holiday season. However, I know there are quite a few people who are still leery about online shopping. There's good news though, you can shop online safely AND you can score some amazing deals too!

Be sure to check out the Internet Crime Complaint Center for tons of information about protecting yourself online. Here's a few tips that will help you out this holiday season:

1. Always Shop Secure: This means, if you're shopping online, make sure you have a secure connection. You don't want to be shopping online while using the Starbucks WiFi, shop secure from your own home.

2. Consider the Source: Just like coupons, you have to make sure your deal isn't too good to be true and that it is a legit source. If you get an e-mail with some 'amazing' offer inside, be smart and don't click unless you can trust the source.

3. Stay on Site: When you are entering credit information, make double sure that you are not being redirected to another site. If you see the URL at the top of your screen change to an entirely different website, that should set off some red flags. The only exception to this would be if you use an outside method of payment like Paypal but if you're just entering basic credit card info, you should stay on the same website.

With deal hunting, it can be very hard to decide if a site is legit or not. Believe me, even I have had problems with that. If you find a HOT deal, make sure the site has contact information and comes recommended. On our site, either I or our staff try out the sites before we post them. I'm not saying we don't make mistakes, but to the best of our knowledge, we always post legit websites that offer amazing deals.

If you're still nervous, you can purchase Visa gift cards from your bank or a local drugstore and use those to shop online. You won't be using a credit card, just the gift card and it works just the same as a normal Visa. Shopping online is the BEST way to score hot deals for Christmas shopping, I would highly recommend it, just be sure to shop safe!
