Frugal Living: Homemade Finger Paint
Need something easy to help entertain the kiddos? As a former preschool teacher, I’m telling you I can make any type of dough or paint imaginable. But, let’s start with the basics, here is an easy recipe for homemade finger paint:
Ingredients:
1 pkg unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup COLD water
liquid dish detergent
1/2 cup cornstarch
food coloring
Dissolve gelatin in 1/2 cup COLD water. Set aside. In a saucepan add cornstarch. Slowly stir in 1 1/2 cups water until well blended over medium heat. Cook until it boils, becomes smooth, thickens and turns clear. Add gelatin mixture and stir well. Divide into containers and add a drop of liquid dish detergent to each container (this is important because it keeps the paint washable). Add food coloring until desired shade is reached (if you have any liquid watercolors, you can use those as well). Store covered in refrigerator 4-6 weeks.
Above you’ll see I used it for my son as we were practicing the alphabet. I would call out a letter and he had to ‘paint’ the letter and tell me the sound. Easy, messy learning! Enjoy!
