Make Your Own Powdered Laundry Detergent
I wanted to take the time today to repost our recipe for powdered Homemade Laundry Detergent. This is not only easy to make but it's also much easier to keep on hand than the liquid form. I make this by the ton not just for myself but my other family members at all. I promise, it works and it is HE safe!
Be sure to check out the Fabric Softener recipe too!
Homemade Powder Laundry Detergent:
1 Bar Shaved Soap (Fels Naptha or Ivory. Ivory is much easier to find, my detergent below though is yellow because I used Fels Naptha).
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
Directions:
Stir the ingredients together (after shaving the soap) and use 2 TBS per load of laundry. This method works well in HE front loader washers as well since it is a low-suds formula.
I always keep some of this on hand, I primarily use detergent that I've been able to pick up for next to nothing with coupons but when I run out, I grab my homemade detergent. It's great if you have any skin sensitivities too!
How much are you really saving? Well, I'm glad you asked! I checked out the Tide prices at Walmart and compared them to my homemade detergent recipe. Check out the breakdown:
Tide per load cost .23
Homemade Detergent cost per load .07
OR
40 loads of Tide $9.24 at Walmart
40 loads of Homemade Detergent $2.80
We are talking MAJOR savings just by making your own detergent! It takes about 5 minutes to make and can be easily stored in a Mason jar on the shelf or put it into your old detergent box.

How do you shave the soap? Would a kitchen grater used for cheese be OK? (Long thin strips.)
I use Ivory and we actually "melt" it in the microwave it for about a minute. It looks like it is blowing up, but after it cools it is brittle and breaks up easily. We throw the ingredients in the blender to mix well.
Does this laundry detergent have a scent? I think I would miss the scent that comes with Tide, Wisk and ect.
You can shave the soap with a cheese grater-that's how I do it. As for scent, you can add scent with essential oils. You can make it whatever scent you'd like!

I've never tried making my own laundry soap, but would love to. How is this recipe on removing stains? Thankfully, my kiddos aren't little anymore but now they have bigger kinds of stains.
Many thanks!! Now, to just find the ingredients!! FYI: I too love the smells of Tide & Wisk!!
i've just tried out a similar recipe that included a container of Dollar Store oxyclean - that might deal with the stains?
I use downy unstoppables to scent mine I also add a 3lb box of oxyclean and two boxes of regular baking soda my clothes are so soft and it has gotten all the stains out of everything. I have also noticed it gets the urine smell out of my speacial needs daughters clothing and bedding pads.
It does great removing stains and really works! What a money saver! Jessica
Is this HE washer safe? They need low sudsing or it will damage the washer.
