Frugal Kids: Make Your Own Watercolors

March 29, 2015 By Sarah Roe Leave a Comment

It’s SO cold outside! The good news is that there are plenty of things to do indoors if you need to plan your day inside. During my preschool teaching days, we used to make our own paint all the time and today, I wanted to share an easy recipe for watercolor paint. It’s frugal and super easy to make with things you already have on hand.

Make Your Own Watercolors

Ingredients:

3 TBS Baking Soda

3 TBS Vinegar

3 TBS Cornstarch

1 1/2 tsp Light Corn Syrup

Directions: Mix ingredients together (you’ll get a little bit of fizzing), then divide the mixture up into containers of whatever size you choose. Once the ingredients are mixed, you can add in food coloring and mix well.

You can let the paints harden in the containers (even place them in empty lipgloss containers that you will find in travel sections), then wet the paint brush and use it just like store brand watercolors.
